Stefano Canulli

A graduate of Rome’s Fine Arts, he began his career early, at 19 years, notably with Piero Tosi, Luchino Visconti’s Oscar-winning costume designer and Federico Fellini, as well as with Mauro Pagano for theatre and opera costumes.

He then developed privileged links with the finest Roman Couture Houses such as Roberto Capucci, Valentino, both as illustrator and artistic director of advertising campaigns.

His illustrator skills led him, in the 1980s, to sign the covers of the mythical Italian magazine Vanity.

In 1992, Thierry Mugler called on him for his unique “hand”. They began an intense collaboration for Mugler’s House entire Couture creation, advertising campaigns and perfumes such as Angel, A-Men, Alien, Aura, Alien-Men. In 2003 and 2006, they renewed their costume design and artistic direction collaboration for Cirque du Soleil Las Vegas permanent shows ZUMANITY and LOVE, which are still unfading successes.

He is also very successful as an illustrator. His drawings were presented, among other things, at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMa) in New York.

Stefano created, on his own, in 2010, all the costumes of the new Cirque du Soleil Viva Elvis! show in Las Vegas.

In 2013, he continued his illustration work for various magazines. He acted as Mugler’s Artistic Director for Mugler Follies, a new kind of Parisian cabaret, where he worked on costumes, make-ups and the whole imaging of the show.

The same year, he signed the artistic direction of the TV, cinema and print advertising campaigns for the perfume  Alien by Thierry Mugler. For these campaigns,  he collaborated with the famous director and Italian-Canadian photographer Floria Sigismondi.

In his various endeavors, he collaborates regularly with artists such as Ali Mahdavi, Luc Bondy or actors such as Monica Bellucci, Amira Casar, Naomi Watts, Vincent Cassel, …

In 2014, he signed Mugler’s exceptional new cabaret, The Wyld ‘s 500 costumes and make-ups in Friedrichstadt-Palast, Berlin. He continued his collaboration with the FSP and designed 450 costumes for their new 2018 show, VIVID, staged by Krista Molson. To do so, he collaborated with the hat designer Philip Treacy.

In 2018, he signed the house Valentino’s A-W 2018/19 illustrations for the advertising Haute Couture campaign.
